ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO II: COMMUNITY DANCE CENTER IN GREENWICH VILLAGE
Institution: Parsons School of Design at The New School
Instructor: Nick Brinen
This second design studio built on knowledge and skills gained in the first semester to develop a design proposal that incorporates issues of site specificity, material explorations, and structural systems. The format of the course will allow for an exploratory design process, which slowly increases in complexity as the problem changes in scope and scale. The problems introduced, however, have intentionally been kept at a small scale to allow the student to engage with the architecture at all levels of detail – from an overall site plan to consideration of material selection and transformations.
The final project incorporates previous problems into an enclosed, habitable structure that provides indoor comfort and performs in such a way as to provide a particular experience
of performance, audience, and public space. The program for this structure is a community dance center and public space that will incorporate ideas of threshold and protection explored in problems 1 and 2, as well as refining ideas of materiality, light and scale. This investigation should synthesize the previous design solutions and will allow for time to make modifications to each of the earlier designs as the project evolves.
