PARSONS | ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO II | COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE PAVILION & PUBLIC MARKET - SPRING 2011 - UNDERGRADUATE DESIGN STUDIO II - PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN - Professor: Nick Brinen
The format of the course will allow for an exploratory design process, which slowly increases in complexity as the problem changes in scope and scale.
The inlet south of Good Will Park is the location of the project site. We will use the qualities and characteristics of Astoria, Queens, and more specifically of the streets immediately surrounding the park, to modify the design of the “spatial moment” to respond directly to a found condition. The moment will be reinterpreted, with a different purpose and goal as the proposal evolves from a temporary to a permanent structure and from an isolated object designed for protection to an integrated object designed to define threshold. The implementation of the structure at the perimeter between Good Will Park and the site will be thought of as a tool for surveying the site. The new design may be programmed to be inhabitable in different ways and the choice of configuration and material can be modified accordingly.
