JMU | ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO III - COMMUNITY DANCE CENTER - Fall 2021 - Professor: Nick Brinen
As the third in a series of six design studios, this semester’s studio work builds on knowledge and skills gained in the first year of Architectural Design to develop a design proposal that incorporates issues of site specificity, material explorations, and space surrounding the human body. The format of the course will allow for an exploratory design process, which slowly increases in complexity as the problem changes in scope and scale. The first projects introduced, however, have intentionally been kept at a small scale to allow engagement with the architecture at all levels of detail, from an overall site strategy to the human senses and bodily movement.
The project of a Community Dance Center will be explored during the second half of the semester. The process will build upon the initial project to explore coordination of material, light, structure, solid/void, and methods of analysis. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to develop logical design processes accompanied by designing with site/context, program, light, orientation, environment, and the integration of your previous research. These projects encompass a range of scales from the immediate interior that shelters the body to its overall location in the community.
