JMU - ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO III - BATHHOUSE ON THE JAMES - Fall 2022 - Professor: Nick Brinen
This third of six studios in the JMU Architectural Design program.
What is the role of water to a community? The restorative properties of thermal bathing have strengthened communities for thousands of years and the individuals who experience this relationship with water. But is it only water that one can bath in? Are there other phenomena or elements that can add to this practice of wellness?
This studio will evaluate the typology of private and public bathing. Precedents from around the world will be analyzed and translated through scale and measure. Upon the completion of precedent research and site analysis, the studio introduced an urban, public bath house to the edge of the James River in Richmond, VA.
